Oiartzun Theatre Workshops (OAL)

Since 2019, every winter, a physical theatre workshop has opened its doors in Oiartzun. Year after year, this project has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most established and unique meeting places within the physical theatre scene in the Basque Country.
This workshop is not just a course. It is an invitation to an intensive artistic, educational and personal immersion that takes place every year, as winter approaches. A space to pause the daily rhythm, tune into the rhythm of the body and embark on a shared journey. Each edition offers a different journey: new questions, new explorations and new languages. Physical theatre is the starting point; the destination, however, is shaped by all those taking part. An infinite territory in which to discover each person’s own voice.
Inspired by the pedagogical principles of Jacques Lecoq, the workshop has forged a unique identity thanks to the contributions of international teachers, creators from the Basque Country, educators and participants. That is why, although it transforms every year, its essence remains intact: placing the body, play, poetry, imagination and collective creation at the heart of the experience.

But the laboratory is also more than just theatre. It is a meeting place. A space to connect with oneself and, at the same time, an opportunity to build new bridges with others. Here, the group becomes a collective body that supports each individual, whilst each person, in turn, shapes the group. The artistic experience and the human experience become inseparable.
Although deeply rooted in Oiartzun, the laboratory transcends borders. Every year, participants arrive from different corners of the Basque Country, but also from other countries, shaping a fleeting yet profound artistic community in a place where time seems to cease to belong to us.
Year after year, the community itself becomes the laboratory’s most important work.
