What do we do?
From the body to the world…
The Cie DesAires’ productions are rooted in physical theatre. The body is our primary tool for embodying emotion and poetry through movement. We focus on physical expression and form. Ever since our earliest productions, physical theatre and the dramaturgy of movement have shaped our vision, as we believe that words can sometimes erect barriers: boundaries that separate languages, cultures and identities. And we want to believe in a theatre without borders.
We build original worlds using mime, poetry and our imagination, but what we create does not belong to us. We want to offer it to the world, to people, to the audience. Throughout our creative processes, we have used different languages – Spanish, Basque, French, Italian and English – to create works with or without words. Diversity is not an obstacle, but a source of richness. Satire, buffoonery, laughter and play; flashes of light emerging from the heart of the shadows. Allegories, dreamlike and fantastical worlds; rain in the hands of a parched world. These are our most familiar dramatic realms.
Our relationship with the community has now brought us closer to the street. Squares, streets, public spaces and industrial estates have become our playgrounds. We have not replaced one venue with another, but this shift from the theatre to the street is driven by a need to explore the other as well. From this perspective, outreach and socio-artistic processes are taking on an increasingly important role, ensuring that the community itself becomes an integral part of the work and the process.
Whilst Cie DesAires began to take shape in Buenos Aires, it was upon our return home, during our travels across various parts of Europe, that we refined our identity. Today, the company is built upon an invisible – and infinite – thread stretching from the Alps to the Pyrenees, linking Switzerland and the Basque Country.
The world does not belong to us, any more than it belongs to the peoples who inhabit it. However, we wish to offer our world – a world created with love.
